Billing address vs shipping address

Shopify checkout can fill the billing address from the shipping address, and the customer can change it

Direct answer. In ordinary checkout use, the shipping address is where the order is delivered and the billing address is the address the customer enters for payment. Shopify’s address collection preferences page does not use those two definitions. What it does state is: “By default, during checkout, the customer’s shipping address is used as the billing address field automatically, but the customer can enter a different billing address. You can change whether the billing address is filled automatically or left empty.” Checked 12 October 2026. This page is not legal advice.

AddressFence (Shopify App Store · Write a review): Free blocks PO Boxes and parcel lockers on the shipping address at checkout, plus a small set of ZIP rules. Street-number checks and billing-address rules are on a paid plan.

What the Help Center page says it controls

Opening sentence: “Address collection preferences control how shipping and billing address information is collected and validated during checkout.”

The next sentence on that page: “You can allow different shipping and billing addresses, require matching shipping and billing addresses, set up address autocompletion, and validate shipping addresses before orders are placed.”

Activate different shipping and billing addresses

The heading is “Activate different shipping and billing addresses”. Under it, Shopify states the default sentence quoted above. The steps, as written:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
  2. In the Advanced preferences section, click Address collection.
  3. Select Allow shipping and billing address to be different.
  4. Optional: If you don’t want the shipping address to be used as the billing address by default, then activate Don’t use shipping address as billing address by default.
  5. Click Save.

Require shipping and billing address to match

The note under that heading: “This feature is available only to merchants who have upgraded their checkout.”

The paragraph: “For most merchants, it’s recommended to allow the shipping and billing address to be different during checkout. However, you can require the shipping and billing address to match. This will prevent customers from sending gifts, and is only recommended for stores with a high amount of fraudulent orders, and is best paired with an Address Verification System.”

The same section: “This address requirement applies to customers paying online by credit card or Apple Pay. This address requirement doesn’t apply to the following order types:”

Requiring the two addresses to match is not, on this page, a PO Box rule. That difference is billing match is not a PO Box block.

What shipping-address validation says it checks

Under “Validate shipping addresses at checkout”, Shopify states: “This feature validates your customer’s shipping address before the order is placed.” The next sentence on that page: “Additionally, your customer’s shipping address is also automatically validated after the order is placed.” Both sentences name the shipping address. The page does not say this feature validates the billing address.

Checkout validation more broadly is Shopify address validation at checkout. Street number is require a street number. Built-in rules and the billing address are why built-in checkout rules cannot target billing.

What “billing address” usually means

Outside this Help Center page, billing address usually means the address a card issuer or payment provider has on file. This page does not say that, and it does not say how any card network or bank checks the address. No fraud figure is added here. The only fraud sentence on this page is the one Shopify wrote in the matching-address paragraph, quoted above.
