Shopify Open Graph tags for AI shopping agents
Open Graph is not Product JSON-LD — both can be incomplete on a live Shopify PDP
Open Graph share tags and Product JSON-LD are different live Shopify PDP surfaces. Completing one does not complete the other. Check View Source (or equivalent) for both og:* tags and the Product JSON-LD block before you trust an unfurl debugger alone. Neither surface is a ranking or inclusion promise.
Agentic Catalog by momiji (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that scores readiness including llms.txt and robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, plus live Product JSON-LD and Open Graph completeness on product pages, as listed. It does not rewrite theme Liquid, does not guarantee AI recommendations or ChatGPT placement, and does not replace counsel. Confirm live listing text rather than this page. This guide does not add prices or a plan matrix.

Free check first: Product JSON-LD field checker runs in your browser and sends nothing. Paste product JSON-LD and see which merchant-listing fields are present or missing.
Job: stop treating share/unfurl Open Graph tags as the same surface as Product JSON-LD. Agents and unfurlers may read different markup. Completing one does not auto-fix the others.
llms.txt, Product JSON-LD, and Open Graph are three jobs
Open Graph is not Product JSON-LD — completing one does not complete the other.
| Surface | What it is | What completing it does not do |
|---|---|---|
llms.txt / robots.txt |
Crawler policy and a public hint of which URLs an LLM-facing agent should prefer | Put Product structured data or share meta into the PDP <head> |
| Product JSON-LD | A structured Product graph in the page (often a JSON-LD script) |
Emit Open Graph share tags, or rewrite robots.txt |
| Open Graph | Share / unfurl meta in <head> (property="og:…") |
Complete Product JSON-LD identifiers or offers |
A theme can emit basic og:title / og:image on a product page while Product JSON-LD is still missing identifiers or offers. The reverse is also true. View both surfaces on the live URL.
Native theme path: View source, not a Facebook debugger alone
Many Online Store themes emit some product Open Graph tags from the product object. Shopify’s Liquid Open Graph tags example (HTTP 200) shows a social-meta-tags.liquid snippet that sets og:site_name, og:url, og:title, og:type, and og:description, and on product templates pulls title, type product, and product images from the product object. Shopify also documents that if a theme omits og:image, the platform can generate fallback og:image, og:image:secure_url, og:image:width, and og:image:height from the page_image object (HTTP 200). Theme SEO metadata for title, description, and canonical URLs is separate: Add SEO metadata to your theme.
Those are share / unfurl properties Shopify theme docs support. They are not a “required for ChatGPT” property checklist — Shopify’s primary sources do not publish one. Do not treat a third-party blog’s OG key list as what any app scores.
Open a live product page (and the homepage if you care about store-level share tags). Use View source. Search for og: in <head> and for application/ld+json Product markup. Facebook’s sharing debugger checks how Facebook unfurls a URL. It does not prove agent readiness, and it does not prove JSON-LD completeness.
Install Agentic Catalog by momiji → run check → fix first flagged gap
JSON-LD is the sibling job: identifiers and offers live there
This page’s job is the OG vs JSON-LD confusion. Identifiers, offers, and the rest of the Product graph belong on the JSON-LD sibling: crawler rules and product JSON-LD. First-barcode / GTIN Admin notes are Shopify GTIN / barcode for AI shopping agents. Shopify’s Liquid structured_data filter is a JSON-LD path, not an Open Graph path. Completing share tags does not put a GTIN into JSON-LD.
Not the same as robots.txt, llms.txt, GTIN Admin, or a Merchant Center feed
- robots.txt allow vs block for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, or PerplexityBot is crawler policy. That path is GPTBot / ClaudeBot / PerplexityBot allow vs block.
- agents.md / llms.txt customization is a theme-template context file. That path is customize Shopify agents.md and llms.txt.
- GTIN / first-barcode Admin fields are product identifiers. That path is the GTIN guide. Open Graph does not write Admin barcodes.
- Google Merchant Center feed rows are a feed job. A feed fix does not, by itself, put Open Graph or Product JSON-LD on the live PDP.
Fix the matching surface. Do not assume one of these jobs rewrites the others.
App path: score listed completeness, then fix the live theme yourself
The live Agentic Catalog by momiji listing (re-fetched HTTP 200) states that the app checks llms.txt and robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and audits Product JSON-LD and Open Graph completeness on live product pages. Use that score for those named gaps. The listing does not claim the app rewrites theme Liquid, auto-repairs individual Open Graph properties, or edits Admin identifier fields. Confirm the live listing rather than this page.
- View source on a live PDP. Note whether
og:tags and Product JSON-LD are both present. - Open the Agentic Catalog by momiji listing (
apps.shopify.com/agentic-catalog-readiness) and install it. - Run a check of
llms.txt,robots.txtrules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, and Product JSON-LD / Open Graph completeness on live product pages, as listed. - If the score flags Open Graph completeness, fix the live theme (or theme settings) yourself, then re-check. If it flags crawler rules or Product JSON-LD instead, those are sibling jobs.
A score is a checklist. It is not a ChatGPT ranking, inclusion, or sales promise.
Start path: View source both surfaces, then score
- Open a live product page. View source. Search for
property="og:and forapplication/ld+json. - Treat missing OG tags and missing Product JSON-LD as separate gaps. Completing one does not auto-fix the other.
- Install Agentic Catalog by momiji and run the readiness check so
llms.txt, named-bot robots rules, Product JSON-LD, and Open Graph on live product pages are scored together, as the listing states. - Keep robots.txt, agents.md / llms.txt, and GTIN / first-barcode on their sibling guides. Those jobs do not rewrite Open Graph.
What this page is not
- Not a social-ads creative guide, and not Facebook / Instagram campaign setup.
- Not a ranking, traffic, or “listed in ChatGPT shopping” guarantee.
- Not GTIN / first-barcode Admin help. That is Shopify GTIN / barcode for AI shopping agents.
- Not legal advice.
- Not a
robots.txtdeep dive. That is GPTBot / ClaudeBot / PerplexityBot allow vs block. - Not an
agents.md/llms.txtcustomize deep dive. That is customize Shopify agents.md and llms.txt. - Not a claim that Agentic Catalog by momiji rewrites theme Liquid or auto-repairs Open Graph properties.
