UPS delivery to a US PO Box

UPS’s own pages: no delivery to a P.O. box, with a Ground Saver exception UPS states

Direct answer. UPS’s shipping-tools page says: “We only ship to a valid street address and do not deliver to P.O. boxes.” If a shipper uses a P.O. Box address, that page says the recipient’s phone number must be included on the label. It also says packages addressed to P.O. Boxes could be delayed, won’t be covered by any UPS Service Guarantee, and will require an address correction charge, and that UPS does not accept Army Post Office (APO) and Fleet Post Office (FPO) addresses. Section 14 of the UPS Tariff/Terms & Conditions of Service says UPS does not provide delivery to a P.O. Box, that the shipper must make every effort to obtain a street address, that a package addressed to a P.O. Box may experience delays, is not covered by any UPS Service Guarantee, and is subject to an Address Correction charge, and that APO and FPO addresses are not accepted. UPS Ground Saver’s own page answers “Does UPS Ground Saver offer delivery to PO Boxes?” with: “Yes. UPS Ground Saver can deliver to U.S. PO Boxes, as well as APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, because eligible packages may be handed off to USPS for final delivery.” Those are the statements on those UPS pages. PO Box Blocker — AddressFence (Shopify App Store · Write a review). Free blocks PO Boxes and parcel lockers on the shipping address at checkout, plus a small set of ZIP rules. Street-number checks and billing-address rules are on a paid plan. You can test any address in the simulator before publishing, with one-click rollback. This page is what UPS states about PO Box delivery — not a list of every string a checkout rule should match.

Checklist before you treat a PO Box as deliverable by UPS

What the UPS pages say, and what they do not name

The shipping-tools answers and section 14 are the general UPS statements this page can quote. They tell the shipper to use a street address, and they describe delay, loss of the service guarantee, and an address correction charge when a P.O. Box is used anyway. Section 14 does not name UPS Access Point or Hold for Pickup as the substitute for a P.O. Box. This page does not add those services as a PO Box alternative.

UPS Ground Saver is a different page, and it states a different destination list: U.S. PO Boxes, and APO, FPO, and DPO addresses, with a handoff to USPS for eligible packages. The shipping-tools page, in the answers quoted above, says UPS does not accept APO and FPO addresses. Read the page for the service on the label before you treat those two sentences as one rule. Confirm the live pages for the account and service you buy.

What FedEx’s own page says

FedEx’s Address Validation documentation states: “FedEx does not deliver to P.O. Boxes except via FedEx Ground® Economy (Formerly known as FedEx SmartPost®).” That is the FedEx sentence this page can cite. It is not a claim that FedEx and UPS use the same exception, the same handoff, or the same address list.

Why checkout still needs a PO Box rule

A carrier rule does not, by itself, stop Shopify checkout from storing a PO Box line. A merchant who cannot fulfill to a PO Box still needs a checkout rule that catches the address lines shoppers type. How Publication 28 writes the line, and how Street Addressing differs, is US PO Box address format. The spellings a one-string rule misses are PO box spelling variants. Whether checkout can collect the line at all is Does Shopify ship to PO Boxes?. A shipping-only block can still leave a PO Box on billing: block a PO Box on the billing address. APO, FPO, and DPO format on Shopify is Shopify APO, FPO, and DPO addresses. This page does not repeat those rules.
