Agentic Commerce Protocol
agenticcommerce.dev calls ACP an open standard for programmatic commerce flows
Direct answer. agenticcommerce.dev says: “An open standard for programmatic commerce flows between buyers, AI agents, and businesses.” The same page says: “ACP is open source and community-designed under the Apache 2.0 license.” It also says: “Stripe and OpenAI developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol to define a common language for how agents and businesses transact—including coordinating checkout and securely sharing payment credentials.” And: “OpenAI is the first AI platform to implement ACP with ChatGPT”. Implementing the protocol does not mean products are automatically listed. The page’s answer is: “No, each AI platform will manage their own process for how businesses can participate. If your business wants to participate in ChatGPT, you'll need to apply.” This page does not rank protocols or claim traffic or sales.
Agentic Catalog by momiji (Shopify App Store · Write a review): “Audit catalog and product readiness before launch or AI shopping discovery. Review fix guidance, rerun scans, and export CSV evidence.” It does not implement ACP.

Checklist before you treat ACP as a store setting
- Read agenticcommerce.dev for what the protocol site says ACP is.
- The spec and docs on that site are Docs and the GitHub repository. The page also links Stripe’s agentic commerce docs.
- A business that wants to participate in ChatGPT still applies. The protocol page says each AI platform manages its own process.
- Shopify’s published pages reviewed for this guide describe UCP. They are linked below. They do not describe ACP.
- Catalog fields on a product page are a different job: Shopify Product JSON-LD and catalog readiness.
What the protocol site says
The home page of agenticcommerce.dev opens with “An open standard for programmatic commerce flows between buyers, AI agents, and businesses.” Further down it says “ACP is open source and community-designed under the Apache 2.0 license. Businesses can implement the specification to transact with any AI agent or payment processor.”
On who built it, the page says: “Stripe and OpenAI developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol to define a common language for how agents and businesses transact—including coordinating checkout and securely sharing payment credentials. We built ACP as a collaborative, open source standard and we welcome your feedback on how to improve it.” The dash in “transact—including” is the em dash on that page.
On the first implementation, the page says: “OpenAI is the first AI platform to implement ACP with ChatGPT”. On listing, the FAQ answer begins “No,” and continues: “each AI platform will manage their own process for how businesses can participate. If your business wants to participate in ChatGPT, you'll need to apply.”
Shopify pages reviewed for this guide
Three Shopify pages were read for the words “Agentic Commerce Protocol,” “agenticcommerce,” and “ACP” as a protocol name: How agentic commerce works, AI commerce at scale, and shopify.dev/docs/agents. Those pages do not describe ACP. They describe the Universal Commerce Protocol. This page does not say ACP was renamed to UCP. It only reports what those three pages say.
Agentic storefronts, and the theme files agents.md and llms.txt, are separate Shopify surfaces: Shopify agentic storefronts, Customize agents.md and llms.txt, and llms.txt vs llms-full.txt.
ACP and UCP, from each protocol’s own site
UCP is already written up at Shopify Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The table uses only sentences from agenticcommerce.dev and from ucp.dev plus shopify.dev/docs/agents. It does not rank them.
| ACP | UCP | |
|---|---|---|
| Site | agenticcommerce.dev | ucp.dev |
| How the site describes it | “An open standard for programmatic commerce flows between buyers, AI agents, and businesses.” | Heading: “The common language for platforms, agents, and businesses.” Then: “UCP provides building blocks for agentic commerce across industries—from discovery to checkout and beyond—allowing the ecosystem to operate through one standard, without custom builds.” |
| Who the site names | “Stripe and OpenAI developed the Agentic Commerce Protocol to define a common language for how agents and businesses transact—including coordinating checkout and securely sharing payment credentials.” “OpenAI is the first AI platform to implement ACP with ChatGPT”. | “UCP is an open standard designed to let AI agents, apps, businesses, and payment providers interact seamlessly without needing custom, one-off integrations for every connection.” shopify.dev/docs/agents says “Shopify’s MCP tools implement UCP at every step of the buyer journey.” |
| Capabilities the site lists | The quoted sentences name coordinating checkout and securely sharing payment credentials. The docs are /docs and GitHub. | “Catalog Search and Lookup, Cart Building, Identity Linking, Checkout, and Order Management.” |
What this page is not
- Not a ranking, an adoption count, or a sales or traffic claim.
- Not a statement that implementing ACP lists a product in ChatGPT.
- Not a statement that ACP and UCP are the same protocol or that one replaced the other.
- Not the UCP page. That URL is Shopify Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).
