Shopify agentic storefronts
Agentic storefronts share products with AI channels. Turning off Catalog access does not stop open-web crawling
Direct answer. Shopify Help says agentic storefronts let customers discover and purchase products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. Products are made available through Shopify Catalog, or through the Google and YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center for Google AI Mode and Gemini. Agentic storefronts is active by default for eligible stores. You manage channels in Sales channels, then Agentic. Managing agentic storefronts names the settings “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, “Shopify Catalog access”, and per-channel controls. Turning off Shopify Catalog access does not stop discovery through web crawling and indexing. Shopify Help says it can take up to 7 days before product data is no longer shared through Shopify Catalog. To hide a product, Help says set the product status to Unlisted. This page is not a ranking or inclusion promise.
Agentic Catalog by momiji (Shopify App Store · Write a review) is a Shopify app that checks AI agent readiness: it shows whether GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot can reach your store and which product data is missing. It audits catalog and product readiness, checks llms.txt and robots.txt rules for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, audits Product JSON-LD and Open Graph completeness on live product pages, and reviews fix guidance. The listing does not say the app turns Shopify Catalog access on or off. Crawler files are a separate page. Open Graph is another.

Free check first: Product JSON-LD field checker runs in your browser and sends nothing. Paste product JSON-LD and see which merchant-listing fields are present or missing.
Checklist before you change a channel
- Read agentic storefronts and managing agentic storefronts. The controls are Sales channels, then Agentic.
- If “Allow Shopify to manage for me” is on, Help says channels have Catalog access, direct checkout is activated where relevant, and new channels are added automatically.
- To manage channels yourself, turn that setting off, then change “Shopify Catalog access” or the channel you opened. Save.
- Expect open-web crawling to continue. Help says Unlisted status is the hide control, and that it also hides the product from sitemaps, search engines, and online store search.
- Do not treat a robots.txt block as a Catalog block. That difference is robots.txt and AI crawlers.
Where the controls are, and what turning them off does not stop
Help says that by default all available channels have access to products through Shopify Catalog, or through the Google and YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center for Google AI Mode and Gemini. “Allow Shopify to manage for me” is the default. When it is off, you can change Shopify Catalog access, automatic enrollment in new channels, direct checkout where a channel offers it, and individual channel settings. The ChatGPT page says that channel is active by default for eligible stores, and that you remove its Catalog access from the same Agentic screen: turn off “Allow Shopify to manage for me”, open ChatGPT, turn off Shopify Catalog access, and save. Data sharing and privacy says that with neither Catalog access nor direct checkout activated, channels cannot access product data through Shopify Catalog going forward.
The same managing page says that if you turn off Shopify Catalog access, it can take up to 7 days before product data is no longer being shared through Shopify Catalog. It also says that when access is deactivated, products can still be discovered through web crawling and indexing, and that deactivating Catalog access does not remove products from being displayed on Shop. The Catalog and product discovery page says the same thing: opting out of Shopify Catalog does not stop other discovery, including web crawling and indexing. To hide products from AI channels, that page says set the product status to Unlisted, and it warns that Unlisted also hides the product from sitemaps, search engines such as Google, and online store search. The managing page also names Unlisted product status, or the seo.hidden metafield, when you want a product hidden from Shop as well as from third-party channels.
Blocking crawlers in robots.txt is a different layer. The products page says those rules affect open-web discoverability and do not stop Shopify Catalog from sending product data to agentic storefronts you have activated. Walk that file on robots.txt and AI crawlers.
Why product data quality matters, without a ranking promise
The products page says that when Shopify Catalog syndicates products, they are listed by default with their title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes, structured so AI agents can parse them. The ChatGPT page says a store needs its terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy completed in Settings, then Policies. The managing page’s listing-quality notes mention description completeness, images, reviews, variant and option data, and whether shipping, returns, refund, and other store policies are present. Shopify also says agentic channels often re-rank results on their own logic, and that the search preview is a directional signal, not an exact prediction. This page does not claim that a title, a barcode, or a policy field produces a rank or an inclusion.
Those Help pages do not, in the sections opened here, name GTIN as a Catalog field. Barcode handling is Shopify GTIN / barcode for AI shopping. Product JSON-LD and Open Graph are storefront markup, not the Sales channels, then Agentic, switch. Those surfaces are catalog readiness and Open Graph for AI shopping.
What this page is not
- Not a ranking, inclusion, or sales promise.
- Not the robots.txt allow-or-block job. That URL is Shopify robots.txt and AI crawlers.
- Not the Open Graph job. That URL is Shopify Open Graph tags.
- Not a claim that the readiness app enrolls a store in an AI channel. The listing describes audits of llms.txt, robots.txt, JSON-LD, and Open Graph.

Not a ranking or inclusion promise. Confirm the live Shopify Help pages before you treat a setting as on or off. Turning off Shopify Catalog access does not, on those pages, stop open-web crawling. The app audits readiness signals. It does not change Sales channels, then Agentic.
