FedEx delivery to a P.O. box

FedEx’s Service Guide says packages cannot be delivered to P.O. boxes or P.O. box ZIP codes

Direct answer. The FedEx Service Guide (U.S. edition; cover line “Effective January 5, 2026 / Updated September 11, 2026”; download linked from fedex.com/en-us/service-guide.html), under FedEx Terms and Conditions for U.S. shipments, in Pickup and delivery, says: “Packages cannot be delivered to P.O. boxes or P.O. box ZIP codes. Package addresses must include the complete street address and ZIP code of the recipient.” The same guide’s Address Correction entry for FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery says that if the shipper provides an incomplete, incorrect, or P.O. box recipient address, FedEx may attempt to determine the correct address, complete delivery, and notify the shipper of the address correction. International terms, under the heading “Post office box addresses,” allow post office box addresses for certain international locations, including Puerto Rico, and say FedEx cannot deliver to U.S. military post office box addresses such as APO, FPO, and DPO. FedEx’s Address Validation API documentation says FedEx does not deliver to P.O. Boxes except via FedEx Ground Economy. This page is not legal advice.

PO Box Blocker — AddressFence (Shopify App Store · Write a review): Free blocks PO Boxes and parcel lockers on the shipping address at checkout, plus a small set of ZIP rules. Street-number checks and billing-address rules are on a paid plan. This page is what FedEx states about P.O. box delivery. It is not the UPS page.

Checklist before you treat a P.O. box as a FedEx delivery address

U.S. terms: Pickup and delivery

In FedEx Terms and Conditions, U.S. shipments, the continued Pickup and delivery section says: “Packages cannot be delivered to P.O. boxes or P.O. box ZIP codes. Package addresses must include the complete street address and ZIP code of the recipient.” That sentence sits after the paragraph on using a postal service, an interline cartage agent, a freight forwarding service, or another carrier, and before the paragraph on hotels, hospitals, government offices, university campuses, and other central receiving areas. This page does not quote fee amounts from the guide.

FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery address correction

Under “Other transportation-related fees and shipping information,” the Address Correction entry includes this paragraph for FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery: “For FedEx Ground® and FedEx Home Delivery® shipments, if the shipper provides an incomplete, incorrect, or P.O. box recipient address, we may attempt to determine the correct address, complete delivery, and notify the shipper of the address correction. We may use the address included in the shipper’s electronic shipment information to determine whether an address correction is necessary. We assess an additional charge for delivery or attempted delivery to the corrected address.” After a sentence that states a fee amount, which this page does not quote, the same paragraph says: “The FedEx Money-Back Guarantee does not apply to these shipments, and we are not liable for failing to complete delivery or meet our scheduled delivery time.”

International terms: Post office box addresses

In FedEx Terms and Conditions, International shipments (U.S. edition), the heading “Post office box addresses” says: “You may use post office box addresses for certain international locations, including shipments to Puerto Rico, but you must include a valid telephone, fax, or telex number on the air waybill. FedEx cannot deliver to U.S. military post office box addresses such as APO, FPO, and DPO.” APO, FPO, and DPO format on Shopify is a separate page: Shopify APO, FPO, and DPO addresses.

Address Validation docs

The Introduction of the Address Validation API documentation says: “Do not use this API to determine the deliverability of an address. FedEx does not offer delivery service to every valid address. FedEx does not deliver to P.O. Boxes except via FedEx Ground® Economy (Formerly known as FedEx SmartPost®).” The Business Rules list on the same page repeats that the API is not for determining package deliverability, and that FedEx does not deliver to P.O. Boxes except via FedEx Ground Economy. Those docs are a different page from the Service Guide terms quoted above.

Street Addressing, and the Shopify checkout line

usps.com says: “With Street Addressing (if available), you have the option of using the street address of your Post Office location, combined with your PO Box number, as your mailing address.” How Publication 28 writes a PO Box, and how Street Addressing differs, is US PO Box address format. This page does not repeat that format.

Whether checkout can collect a PO Box, and what a shipping rate can block, are Does Shopify ship to PO Boxes? and PO box shipping rate versus checkout validation. A shipping-only block can still leave a PO Box on billing: block a PO Box on the billing address. UPS states its own rule, including the Ground Saver exception on UPS’s pages: Does UPS deliver to a US PO Box? This page does not repeat the UPS terms.
