Accounts and customer service

There is no preview-only staff permission — share a visitor link instead

Direct answer. Shopify does not document a staff permission that only previews the online store. The admin Online Store eye icon sits with Themes. Store permissions says Themes lets users view, change, and publish any free or paid themes in Draft themes, and also grants CLI access. That is not a preview-only role for Accounts or Customer Service. For the live storefront, staff can open the public domain with no admin permission. If the store is in private mode, share the storefront password from Online Store > Preferences — not the admin password. For an unpublished theme, someone who already has Themes creates a visitor preview: Shopify documents that visitor previews need no login and expire 2 days after the URL is created, on Adding, previewing, and buying themes. This page is not legal advice.

Staff Access Audit Guard (Shopify App Store · Write a review) reviews installed-app access, granted scopes, staff access records, and ownership evidence without reading customer or order data. It tracks staff and collaborator access with 30/90-day review reminders. It does not add a preview-only permission, rotate preview links, or revoke Themes. This page is preview without theme edit — not leftover 2FA and not publish-rights scoring.

What native Shopify can and cannot do

Native Shopify can let anyone with the URL see the live store. Restrict access to your online store documents private mode and a separate storefront password on Online Store > Preferences. For a draft theme, a user with Themes opens Preview and copies a visitor preview link from the preview bar. Visitor previews are visible to anyone with the URL and expire after 2 days. Merchant previews require admin authentication, can reach checkout, and expire after 30 days. Shopify says you cannot share a preview of the published theme that way; the published theme is the live storefront.

Native Shopify cannot grant “preview only” on a staff role. Online store permissions in Help Center are Themes, Edit code, and Blog posts and pages. Edit code is a further write surface on top of Themes; leaving Edit code off still leaves Themes able to change and publish draft themes. Do not grant Themes to Accounts or Customer Service just to un-grey Online Store in admin.

Not legal advice. Confirm the live Themes permission and theme-preview articles before you grant Themes for an eye icon. The app reviews access you already granted. It does not add a preview-only permission.
