UFI on the Shopify product page

UFI on the product page: part of the Art. 17 offer block from 1 Jan 2028 — not a substitute for the pack label

CLPLens: CLP Hazard Display (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that records CLP hazard display data — GHS pictograms and statements — syncs app-owned product metafields, shows a storefront hazard block, and keeps missing-field review / audit records as the listing describes. It does not classify mixtures, generate UFIs, submit a poison-centre notification (PCN), certify compliance, or replace counsel. A merchant-supplied UFI can sit with the hazard profile or metafield as part of the Art. 17 set. This page is not legal advice.

Free check first: CLP label element checker runs in your browser and sends nothing. Paste CLP label text and see which Article 17 label elements it mentions or lacks.

Job: put the Unique Formula Identifier on the Shopify product page with the other visible Art. 17 label elements when that mixture already needs a UFI on the pack — not only in a buried SDS PDF, and not instead of the physical label.

Install CLPLens: CLP Hazard Display, store the merchant-supplied UFI with the hazard profile, then confirm the live product page.

What a UFI is — and what this page is not

A UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) is a 16-character alphanumeric code printed on the label as UFI: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX for mixtures that fall under poison-centre / Annex VIII duties. ECHA’s UFI explainer and the CLP labelling guidance treat it as obligatory supplemental labelling information (Art. 25) sitting with the Art. 17 label set when Annex VIII applies — confirm the live CLP / Annex VIII text. The code links the product on the market to the mixture information submitted to appointed bodies. This page is not a PCN how-to and not a UFI generator.

Distance-sale timeline — today vs 1 January 2028

Today–31 December 2027: Art. 48(2) of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 still requires that an advertisement which lets a member of the general public buy without first seeing the label must mention the hazard type or types indicated on the label. A safety-data-sheet link alone is not enough — that is the Commission interpretation recorded in the ECHA Forum report on internet sales. Art. 48(2) is a hazard-type mention on the advert, not a full Art. 17 reprint.

From 1 January 2028: Regulation (EU) 2024/2865 Art. 1 point (26) replaces Art. 48 (advertisements). Point (27) inserts Art. 48a “Distance sales offers”: the offer must clearly and visibly indicate the Art. 17 label elements. Art. 17’s set includes supplier identity; nominal quantity for general-public packages; product identifiers; pictograms; signal word; hazard and precautionary statements; and supplemental information. Where a UFI is a required label element for that mixture, it belongs in that visible offer block with the pictograms and statements — not only in a footer PDF. Confirm points 26–27 on the live HTML, not this paraphrase.

Regulation (EU) 2025/2439 (OJ 3 December 2025) moved Art. 1 points (14), (15)(c), (26) and (27) of 2024/2865 to 1 January 2028 (new Art. 2(3a)). Those points originally applied from 1 July 2026. Supplier blogs and 2024–2025 notes that still quote 1 July 2026 for the online-offer rule are out of date. Pages that still say the UFI is never required on a web shop (for example the February 2024 chem-consulting.si note that a UFI “is not necessary” in the online store) describe the pre-48a label-only practice. From 1 January 2028 that answer is incomplete for a distance-sale offer of a mixture that already carries a UFI on the pack. Confirm EUR-Lex, not the blog date.

Art. 48(2) today is written around advertisements aimed at the general public. Art. 48a from 2028 is written around distance-sale offers of substances and mixtures. This page does not invent a professional-only exemption, and it does not say every B2B-only offer must show a UFI. The UFI belongs in the visible offer block where Annex VIII / labelling rules already require it on the pack. Confirm your channel and mixture on the live articles.

Native Shopify path

Shopify Admin has no “UFI” or “CLP Art. 17” toggle. Put the code you already have from the pack label (or the supplier file) into a product metafield — for example custom.ufi, or a field that sits with your other hazard metafields. Then render it with a theme Text, Custom Liquid, or hazard block near the price / Add to cart. Keep the printed format UFI: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. Show it on the same surface as the pictograms and H statements. Do not invent a native UFI generator in Admin, and do not treat an SDS download as the offer block.

App path — display the code you already have

After the UFI exists in product data, use the app path to build or sync the hazard profile (pictograms + statements + the merchant-entered UFI if you store it there) and confirm the live PDP. CLPLens: CLP Hazard Display records that display data, syncs app-owned metafields, and keeps a missing-field / audit record. It does not invent the code, file PCN, or classify the mixture.

  1. Copy the UFI from the pack label or supplier file. Do not generate a new one on this page.
  2. Open the listing (apps.shopify.com/clp-hazard-info-display) and install it on the store that distance-sells the mixture.
  3. Create or update the product hazard profile: pictograms, statements, and the merchant-entered UFI if you store it on that profile / metafield.
  4. Review missing fields, then open the live product page and confirm the UFI sits with the Art. 17 block near price / Add to cart — not only in a PDF.
