Prop 65 warning

Prop 65 warning on the product page needs a chemical name in 2028

A short-form Prop 65 warning on the product page has to name at least one listed chemical when goods are manufactured and labeled on or after 1 January 2028. The old chemical-free line is not that safe harbor for those new labels.

This page is the product-page / short-form job, not a listing mirror. OEHHA's amended Article 6 took effect 1 January 2025, with a three-year label transition through 1 January 2028. Confirm the live regulation before you ship copy. Packaging or email-only copy is not enough when the storefront still shows the old short form.

Start path: chemical name on the 2028 product page

  1. Open the Prop 65 Warning Manager listing and install it on the store that sells into California.
  2. Pick a short-form template that already includes a chemical-name placeholder (cancer, reproductive harm, or both). Use the list name of a chemical you are actually warning for.
  3. Attach that warning to the products whose 2028 manufacture/label run needs the new short form.
  4. Open a live product page and confirm the on-page warning matches the template. Keep the audit log of what you published.

The app helps display and document warning content you choose. It does not decide whether an exposure requires a warning.

Install, then set product-page short-form warnings

Shopify Product Disclosures vs this product-page job

Shopify’s native Product Disclosures can put disclosure text on a product. That is useful when you only need a simple on-page notice.

This guide’s job is narrower: the 2028 short-form product-page warning that names a listed chemical, with a path you can show later.

Job Shopify Product Disclosures Prop 65 Warning Manager (this path)
2028 chemical-name short-form templates Not the focus of this guide Short-form templates with a chemical-name placeholder for the 2028 label transition
Merchant approval before go-live Depends on how your store team publishes Review and approve warning content before it goes live on the storefront
Audit trail of what was published Not the workflow this page documents Audit log of the warning text you attached and published per product
Product-page short form that matches the 2028 label path Generic disclosure text Cited short-form content you attach at product level and confirm on the live page

Use native Product Disclosures when a typed notice is enough. Since 17 June 2026 those native types are cancer, reproductive, both, and alcohol. Shopify can show a warning; the app is not the only way. Sources disagree on whether that text also appears at cart and checkout. The old OEHHA short-form remains a safe harbor for products manufactured before 1 January 2028. Chemical names did not become mandatory in January 2026. Use this path when you need a chemical name on the short-form for products manufactured on or after that date, a go-live approval step, and a record of what went live. Comparison: native disclosures vs an approval and audit-log app.

The app helps display and document warning content you choose. It does not decide whether an exposure requires a warning. This page is not legal advice.

Install, attach the short-form, approve before go-live

The paying proof here is a 2028 chemical-name short-form on the product page, with merchant approval and an audit trail — not a generic disclosure dump.

  2. Attach the short-form warning that names the listed chemical on the target product.
  3. Review and approve before go-live.
  4. Confirm the live product page, and keep the audit record of what published.

Worked example: one product → storefront short form → audit row

Example path (illustrative; your listed chemical and theme may differ):

  1. Choose the list name of one chemical you are actually warning for (full Proposition 65 list name, not a nickname).
  2. In the app, pick a short-form template that already includes a chemical-name placeholder and attach it to one product.
  3. Open that product’s live storefront URL and confirm the on-page short form shows the chemical name (theme block / app embed render).
  4. Check the audit log for a row that records what was published for that product.

Install, then run the one-product path

What changes on 1 January 2028

Short-form safe harbor by label date (2028 transition)
Label date Short-form safe harbor
Manufactured and labeled before 1 Jan 2028 Prior chemical-free short form still available (unlimited sell-through of that labeled stock)
Manufactured and labeled on or after 1 Jan 2028 Short form must name at least one listed chemical per endpoint you warn for
Product page / internet warning Use the same short-form content as the label you are relying on
Retailer online update after manufacturer notice 60-day window during the three-year implementation period

Example new short-form sentences (safe-harbor options; insert the list name):

WARNING: Cancer risk from exposure to [name of chemical]. See www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
WARNING: Can expose you to [name of chemical], a carcinogen. See www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
WARNING: Risk of cancer and reproductive harm from exposure to [name of chemical]. See www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Signal-word alternatives include CA WARNING: and CALIFORNIA WARNING:. On-label short form also uses the yellow triangle symbol. This is a paraphrase of the approved text, not a substitute for 27 CCR §25603.

What this page is not

If you also ship EU hazardous goods that need CLP/GHS pictograms on the product page, see the CLP hazard product-page guide — keep this page focused on Prop 65 short-form + chemical name.

Do 2028 product-page short-form warnings need a chemical name?

For the current short-form safe harbor, yes when the product is manufactured and labeled on or after 1 January 2028. OEHHA’s amended Article 6 (effective 1 January 2025) requires the short-form text to name at least one listed chemical for each endpoint you are warning for (cancer and/or reproductive harm), unless one named chemical is listed for both. Use the chemical name as it appears on the Proposition 65 list. This page is not legal advice.

Can I keep the old chemical-free short form after 2028?

Only for products manufactured and labeled before 1 January 2028. Those goods may keep the prior short-form content (no chemical name) and still claim that older safe harbor, including unlimited sell-through of already-labeled stock. New manufacture and labeling on or after 1 January 2028 needs the chemical-identifying short form if you want that safe harbor. Confirm dates against OEHHA, not this page.

Does a product page warning have to match the on-product label?

Internet and catalog warnings are part of the same clear-and-reasonable warning rules. A product page that still shows the old chemical-free short form while the 2028-labeled unit names a chemical is the gap this page is about. During the three-year implementation period, retailers have a 60-day window to update online short-form warnings after notice from a manufacturer. Copy the warning content you actually use; do not invent a chemical name on the page that is not on the label.

Do I have to name every listed chemical in the product?

No. Safe-harbor short-form content requires the name of one or more listed chemicals for which the warning is being provided — at least one per endpoint if you warn for both cancer and reproductive harm, unless a single named chemical is listed for both. You choose which listed chemical(s) to name. The full list name is required; a nickname or CAS-only label is not the published safe-harbor form. This is not a substitute for counsel.

Is the old “Cancer and Reproductive Harm — www.P65Warnings.ca.gov” short form still a safe harbor?

That chemical-free short form remains available under the labeled-before-1-January-2028 transition (Section 25603(c) in the approved text). It is not the short-form safe harbor for products manufactured and labeled on or after that date. New short-form options name the chemical in the sentence, for example “Cancer risk from exposure to [name of chemical]. See www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.” Signal words may be WARNING, CA WARNING, or CALIFORNIA WARNING, plus the required yellow triangle symbol on the label path.

Does an app make the product page “Prop 65 compliant”?

No. Warning content is a legal choice. A listing can help you attach a cited template to a product, show it on the storefront, and keep an audit log of what you published. It does not decide which chemical to name, whether an exposure requires a warning, or whether your method is clear and reasonable. It is not legal advice and does not guarantee compliance.

Where do I get the warning onto the product page?

Use a product-level warning you can cite later: pick a short-form template that already includes a chemical-name placeholder, attach it to the products that will be manufactured or labeled in 2028, and confirm the live product page shows that text. Prop 65 Warning Manager is the App Store listing used for that job on this site. Open the listing, install, then set product warnings and review the audit log.

Attach a cited short-form template that includes a chemical name, then check the live product page.
