France places of manufacture

France: show places of manufacture next to the price on Shopify (Code de l'environnement L. 541-9-1-2)

Online sellers of new clothing, footwear, or household linen to French consumers must show the product’s places of manufacture on the digital listing. Put that line next to the price, in the same character size, and make it clear and legible. By default the duty has applied since 10 July 2026. The article text itself has no turnover or unit threshold.

Free check first: Textile fibre composition checker runs in your browser and sends nothing. Check fibre names against the EU Annex I list and that the blend adds up to 100%.

What does L. 541-9-1-2 require?

Loi n° 2026-602 du 8 juillet 2026, article 2, creates Code de l'environnement L. 541-9-1-2. The article reads:

« Les lieux de fabrication du produit mentionné au 11° de l'article L. 541-10-1 vendu en ligne doivent être portés à la connaissance du consommateur de manière claire et lisible sur la plateforme numérique, en caractères d'une taille égale à celle de l'indication du prix et à proximité de celui-ci. »

In English: for a product mentioned in L. 541-10-1 11° sold online, the places of manufacture must be made known to the consumer on the digital platform, clearly and legibly, in characters the same size as the price, and next to that price. Source: AIDA, loi n° 2026-602. The Journal officiel record is Légifrance JORFTEXT000054399113. The CMP working text is Sénat texte n° 766 (2025-2026) (that draft still said “le lieu” and mentioned second-hand; the promulgated article 2 does not).

Scope is “the product mentioned in 11° of L. 541-10-1”. That 11° covers new textile clothing, footwear, and household linen for consumers (produits textiles d'habillement, chaussures ou linge de maison neufs destinés aux particuliers). The same 11° on the consolidated code also includes new home textiles except furnishing items; Légifrance and Lexbase pages were blocked from this environment, so treat that extra limb as something to confirm on the live French text. This page’s practical job is clothing, footwear, and household linen sold online to French consumers.

Article 2 sets no start date of its own and calls for no decree. The law was published in the Journal officiel of 9 July 2026, so by default it has been in force since 10 July 2026 under Code civil article 1. Confirm that on the live French text.

L. 541-9-1-2 has no turnover or unit threshold. Contrast that with L. 541-9-1-1 (ultra-fast fashion / mode ultra-express), whose identification criteria need a Conseil d'État decree and whose IV exempts sellers established in another EU/EEA state; and with the AGEC product sheet (L. 541-9-1), which has turnover and unit thresholds. L. 541-9-1-2 itself has no such EU-establishment carve-out in its text. Do not conclude from this page whether a non-French EU seller is covered: the text has no explicit exemption; get advice.

Service-Public Entreprendre’s news item (A18986) mentions the place-of-manufacture duty in the paragraph about ultra-fast-fashion platforms. The article text itself is not limited to those platforms. This page does not claim official guidance that the duty applies to every shop. It only says the article as written has no threshold and no ultra-fast-fashion condition.

Which places should the line list?

The law does not define “lieux de fabrication”. A cautious reading reuses the AGEC traceability steps for the same products. That is a prudent interpretation, not a legal requirement that L. 541-9-1-2 names those steps.

Those steps sit in Code de l'environnement R. 541-228 X (consolidated; in force in that numbering since 8 April 2024). They were inserted as point X of R. 541-221 by décret n° 2022-748, article 1, then renumbered. The November 2025 ministry AGEC FAQ uses the R. 541-228 number and says, for textiles, “tissage” includes weaving, knitting, or obtaining a non-woven cloth.

Fictional examples only:

Woven in India · Dyed in Portugal · Made up in Portugal
« Tissé en Inde · Teint au Portugal · Confectionné au Portugal »

How to show it next to the price in a Shopify theme (no app needed)

  1. Settings → Custom data → Products → Add definition. Use single line text (or multi-line), for example namespace/key custom.places_of_manufacture. Optionally add three fields (weaving, dyeing/printing, making-up) if you want structured data.
  2. Fill it on each product. Use a variant metafield only if origin differs by variant, and check the line when the buyer switches variants.
  3. Online Store → Themes → Customize → Product template → in the product information section, add a Text block and connect it to the metafield via the dynamic-source (database) icon. Drag it directly under the Price block.
  4. Same character size as the price. Dawn’s default Text block renders as body text, which is smaller than the price. In sections/main-product.liquid the text block renders <p class="product__text inline-richtext …">. In assets/component-price.css, .price--large is 1.6rem, and 1.8rem at 750px and up. Other themes differ. Compare computed font sizes in browser DevTools on mobile and desktop. A starting Custom CSS example for the product-information section:
    .product__info-container .product__text {
      font-size: 1.6rem;
    }
    @media screen and (min-width: 750px) {
      .product__info-container .product__text {
        font-size: 1.8rem;
      }
    }
  5. Check: the line is visible without opening a tab or accordion, on mobile and desktop, on every relevant product — not only in the description, a care-label photo, or a “Details” tab.
  6. Optional Liquid: show the line only for France with localization.country.iso_code == 'FR' (localization / country.iso_code). Showing it to everyone is simpler.

Where FibreLedger fits

FibreLedger Textile Labels validates fibre names against Annex I (EN, DE, FR), flags trade names such as Lycra or Tencel, and records French places of manufacture (listing: “French places of manufacture, in force since 10 July 2026, article quoted”). It does not render the line next to the price, set the font size, or make a listing compliant, and it does not certify.

Install FibreLedger Textile Labels, check fibre names against Annex I, then see which plans add French place-of-manufacture fields.
