Prop 65 alcohol disclosure

Alcoholic beverages use the Prop 65 alcohol disclosure type — not the chemical cancer / reproductive types

Prop 65 Warning Manager (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that publishes Prop 65 product-page warnings from templates citing 27 CCR §§ 25601–25607, including 2028 short-form text that names a listed chemical, and requires merchant approval before any warning goes live, with an audit log of every pick, edit and activation. The live listing does not claim it writes OEHHA alcoholic-beverage copy, and it does not claim the app is required to show Shopify’s native alcohol disclosure. It does not replace age verification, ABC licensing, or shipping-alcohol rules. It does not decide whether a product legally requires a warning. This page is not legal advice.

Alcohol is a separate Prop 65 content path

Beer, wine, spirits, malt beverages, and coolers have their own Proposition 65 warning methods and content under 27 CCR Article 6 — §25607.3 (methods) and §25607.4 (content). That is not the same job as attaching a chemical-exposure disclosure for cancer, reproductive harm, or both, and it is not the 2028 chemical-name short-form path.

Alcohol type vs chemical-exposure types on Shopify Disclosures
Job Shopify entry type What it is for
Alcoholic beverages shopify--disclosure-us-ca-prop65-alcohol Beer, wine, spirits, coolers — the alcoholic-beverage warning path in 27 CCR §§ 25607.3–25607.4
Chemical exposure (cancer) shopify--disclosure-us-ca-prop65-cancer Cancer endpoint notice for a listed chemical — not alcohol safe-harbor text
Chemical exposure (reproductive) shopify--disclosure-us-ca-prop65-reproductive Reproductive-harm notice for a listed chemical
Chemical exposure (both) shopify--disclosure-us-ca-prop65-cancer_reproductive Cancer and reproductive-harm notice for listed chemical(s)

Shopify’s product disclosures docs list the alcohol entry beside cancer / reproductive / both. Do not pick a chemical type because the bottle is “also Prop 65.” Counsel must confirm which path applies to the SKU.

Native path first: attach the alcohol disclosure

Shopify Help Alcohol products states that for selling alcohol in California you can display a Prop 65 Alcohol Warning product disclosure. Product listings gained a Disclosures field on 17 June 2026. Help Adding product disclosures is the Admin walkthrough.

  1. Go to Products and open the alcoholic-beverage product.
  2. In Product metafields, open Disclosures.
  3. Choose the Prop 65 alcohol entry type (shopify--disclosure-us-ca-prop65-alcohol), not cancer / reproductive / both.
  4. Confirm jurisdictions include US-CA.
  5. Set Display preferences (product page and, if needed, cart) and Save.

On supported Online Store themes, populated disclosures show on the product detail page in a Disclosures section or block. Help: Horizon themes add the Disclosures block in Product information; Online Store 2.0 themes such as Dawn add the Disclosures section. Unsupported themes and custom storefronts must render the disclosure metafields themselves — the changelog and shopify.dev both say that. Native Disclosures render on the product page and cart; checkout needs a Checkout UI extension.

The alcohol type does not invent California-only geo-targeting or a ship-to-CA checkout trigger. Those are different jobs.

Warning content: quote OEHHA, do not invent it

Do not paraphrase a substitute for the alcoholic-beverage safe-harbor text. Confirm the live regulation. 27 CCR §25607.4 (Alcoholic Beverage Exposure Warnings — Content) states that a warning for alcoholic beverages, including beer, malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits, includes these elements (quote):

WARNING: Drinking distilled spirits, beer, coolers, wine and other alcoholic beverages may increase cancer risk, and, during pregnancy, can cause birth defects. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/alcohol.

That wording is the regulation’s content, not this site’s rewrite. OEHHA’s April 2025 compilation of Proposition 65 regulations is on the OEHHA P65 regulations PDF. Consumer-facing background: p65warnings.ca.gov/alcohol. Counsel must confirm the text and method you publish. Shopify’s seeded disclosure copy is a starting point — you remain responsible for what goes live.

Internet and delivery: the product page is not always the only touchpoint

A product-page disclosure is the native Shopify surface for the listing. OEHHA’s alcoholic-beverage methods go further. 27 CCR §25607.3 covers sales at a physical location, delivery to consumers in California at a location other than the point of sale, and alcoholic beverages sold over the internet or through a catalog. For internet/catalog sales, that section points at the internet/catalog warning rules in 27 CCR §25602(b) and (c) and a warning to the purchaser or delivery recipient prior to or contemporaneously with delivery.

PDP disclosure is necessary for the online product. It may not be the only required touchpoint. Read the live section. This page does not turn §25607.3 into a packing-slip SOP.

App path: optional approval and audit log — not required to show the alcohol warning

Native alcohol disclosure can satisfy “show the alcohol warning on the product” without an app. Prop 65 Warning Manager is optional when you also need the jobs the live listing actually describes: merchant approval before any warning goes live, an audit trail of picks, edits, and activation, and 2028 short-form templates that name a listed chemical (27 CCR §§ 25601–25607). That chemical-name job is for mixed catalogs that also have non-alcohol SKUs on the 2028 short-form path — not a claim that the app generates OEHHA alcohol copy.

  1. Open the live App Store listing and confirm current wording.
  2. Use native Disclosures for the alcohol-typed notice on supported themes.
  3. Use the app when several people can edit products and you need approve-before-go-live plus the audit log — including chemical SKUs the listing covers.
  4. Confirm the live product page. Keep the audit record of what published.

The app helps display and document warning content the merchant chooses. It does not decide whether an exposure requires a warning. This page is not legal advice.
