Prop 65 California-only

Prop 65 on Shopify: California-only is a jurisdiction job, not an IP pop-up

Prop 65 Warning Manager (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that publishes Prop 65 product-page warnings from templates citing 27 CCR §§ 25601–25607, including 2028 short-form text that names a listed chemical, and requires merchant approval before any warning goes live, with an audit log of every pick, edit and activation. The live listing does not claim geo targeting, IP detection, “show only in California,” or a shipping-address trigger. It does not decide whether a product legally requires a warning. This page is not legal advice.

Three different jobs — do not conflate them

Merchants asking “show a Prop 65 warning only to California customers” are usually mixing three jobs. Only the first is a native jurisdiction field. The third is a checkout-extension / custom-logic problem.

Jurisdiction, render surface, and ship-to-CA are different jobs
Job What it actually is
A. Jurisdiction on structured Disclosures Attach a Prop 65 disclosure whose required jurisdictions field includes US-CA. Shopify’s Prop 65 entry types already use the us-ca-prop65-* naming.
B. Where it renders display_preferences.surfaces may include product_page, cart, and checkout. Native Online Store rendering covers the product page and cart. Checkout needs a Checkout UI extension.
C. Ship-to-CA while the shopper’s market or IP is elsewhere The classic Community case: browse from Wisconsin, enter a California shipping address. That is not the same as setting US-CA on the disclosure. Product-page market contextualization does not automatically mean “when the shipping address becomes California mid-checkout.” Dedicated guide: Prop 65 at checkout when shipping to California.

Solving C is a checkout-extension / custom-logic problem. This page does not attribute C to Prop 65 Warning Manager: the live listing does not claim a geo, IP, or shipping-address trigger.

Native path first: attach a US-CA disclosure

Start with Shopify’s product disclosures documentation. Structured disclosures exist so Prop 65 (and other) notices live as data, not as theme-only copy. Shopify’s Help Center consumer-protection page covers adding customer-facing warnings with the Disclosures product metafield. The 17 June 2026 changelog is the date product listings gained a disclosures field.

Setting US-CA on the disclosure is job A. It is not a promise that a Wisconsin IP plus a later California ship-to will flip the warning on at checkout.

Admin steps (high level)

  1. Go to Products and open the product.
  2. Open disclosures / Product metafields → Disclosures.
  3. Choose a Prop 65 chemical-exposure type (cancer, reproductive, cancer + reproductive, or alcohol).
  4. Confirm jurisdictions include US-CA.
  5. Set surfaces (product_page, cart, and checkout if you intend a checkout extension) and Save.

On supported themes, add or keep the Disclosures section or block on the product template. Confirm what the theme actually shows in a California market / US-CA context and in a non-CA context. Do not treat the shopper’s IP as the jurisdiction. This page does not invent a guarantee that IP equals US-CA.

When the app path fits

Use Prop 65 Warning Manager when you also need chemical-name short-form templates, merchant approval before a warning goes live, and an audit trail of picks, edits, and go-live events — in addition to (not instead of) understanding native US-CA jurisdictions. Open the live App Store listing. The listing does not claim California-only geo targeting.

The app helps display and document warning content the merchant chooses. It does not decide whether an exposure requires a warning. This page is not legal advice.

Not legal advice. Not a compliance guarantee. Confirm 27 CCR Article 6 and the live OEHHA materials before you publish warning copy. Native Disclosures can carry a US-CA jurisdiction. That is not the same as detecting California from an IP address or a shipping field.
