EmpCo carbon-neutral / offset claims
“Carbon neutral” on the product page: EmpCo bans offset-based neutrality — not the same job as “eco-friendly”
Green Claims Guard (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that scans product and copy claims and flags green-claim wording against the exact provision it cites. It does not certify offsets, run a life-cycle assessment, decide whether a claim is lawful, or replace counsel.

Free check first: Green claim wording self-check runs in your browser and sends nothing. Paste product copy and see which environmental wording to review.
Job: find offset-based “carbon neutral” / “climate neutral” / similar GHG-neutrality lines on the Shopify offer — a different EmpCo Annex I item from the generic “eco-friendly” ban — then remove or rewrite those lines. Do not invent a safe substitute slogan. Not legal advice.
When this applies
Directive (EU) 2024/825 (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) amends the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive. Article 4(1): Member States had to adopt measures by 27 March 2026 and apply them from 27 September 2026. Online product copy is an online selling interface. Confirm Art. 4 on EUR-Lex (eli/dir/2024/825) or CELEX 32024L0825. This page is not legal advice.
Split two Annex I jobs — do not conflate 4a and 4c
The same directive adds more than one per-se unfair practice to UCPD Annex I. Confirm the live Annex wording on EUR-Lex. This page’s job is 4c.
- 4a / generic environmental claims — unspecialised “eco-friendly”, “green”, and similar adjectives without recognised excellent environmental performance relevant to the claim. That how-to is EU generic environmental claims ban.
- 4c / this page — claiming, based on offsetting of greenhouse-gas emissions, that a product has a neutral, reduced, or positive environmental impact in terms of GHG. That is prohibited as a per-se unfair practice. Recital 12-style examples include “climate neutral” and “CO2-neutral certified” when those lines rest on offsets rather than the product’s own value-chain lifecycle impact.
A short “carbon-neutral” badge can trip both jobs. Treat offset-based product neutrality as the 4c scan, not as another generic adjective to specify on the same page.
Commission FAQ contrast — product offsets vs value-chain lifecycle vs company projects
The Commission’s EmpCo FAQ (opened for this page; filename faq-empowerting-consumers-gtd.pdf) paraphrases the split as follows. Confirm the live PDF and EUR-Lex; this is not a substitute for either text.
- Offset-based product neutrality is banned. FAQ Q10 quotes Annex I point 4c: claiming, based on the offsetting of greenhouse-gas emissions, that a product has a neutral, reduced, or positive impact on the environment in terms of GHG. Recital 12 examples listed there include “climate neutral”, “CO2 neutral certified”, “carbon positive”, “climate net zero”, and “climate compensated”. A typical FAQ example is calling a specific flight climate-neutral because the airline invests in a reforestation project.
- Actual lifecycle impact inside the product’s value chain is a different analysis. FAQ Q6 and Q10: 4c does not apply when a “climate neutral / reduced / positive” line is based on the product’s own emissions footprint across its value chain — and those claims still need substantiation (the FAQ says a proper life-cycle assessment). Offsetting outside the value chain is not treated as equivalent to reductions inside it.
- Company-level project marketing must not make the product look neutral. FAQ Q10: 4c does not apply to offsetting claims at company level, but those claims stay under the rest of the UCPD. Recital 12 (quoted in the FAQ): companies may advertise investments in environmental initiatives, including carbon-credit projects, if the information is not misleading and does not claim the product has a neutral, reduced, or positive GHG impact based on offsets.

Shopify surfaces to scan
Hunt the string, then remove or rewrite the offset-neutrality line. Do not invent a replacement slogan on this page.
- Product title and description
- Product metafields and on-page badges
- Collection copy
- Theme banners and announcement bars
- Cart and checkout notes
- Shipping method titles (“eco shipping”, “carbon neutral checkout”)
- Markets-facing hang-tag copy that is also described online
Native path — edit or remove the string; there is no EmpCo toggle
Shopify Admin has no EmpCo or “carbon-neutral claims” switch. Open the product, collection, theme, shipping, or checkout setting that holds the line and delete or rewrite it. If any environmental claim remains, prefer a specific, evidenced statement on the same medium (the product page or other online selling interface). Specificity is not a certificate, and this page does not offer a safe substitute slogan. Not legal advice.
App path — cited scans after you know which strings to hunt
After you know which carbon-neutral / climate-neutral / offset lines to hunt, Green Claims Guard runs cited scans on product and catalog copy and names the provision it cites. It does not prove a life-cycle assessment, bless an offset programme, or decide legality.
- List the Shopify surfaces above that still say the product is carbon-neutral, climate-neutral, or GHG-positive because of offsets.
- Open the listing (
apps.shopify.com/green-claims-guard) and install it on the store that sells to EU consumers. - Run a scan on the products or collections that carry those lines.
- For each flag, remove or rewrite the offset-neutrality wording on the live surface. Re-open the live page. Repeat when you add products or shipping titles.
What this page is not
- Not legal advice, a compliance certification, or a substitute for counsel. Confirm Directive (EU) 2024/825, the Commission FAQ, and your Member State’s measures.
- Not the generic eco-friendly / “green” scan. That job is EU generic environmental claims ban.
- Not EmpCo spare-parts or repairability on the PDP. That job is EmpCo spare parts and repairability on the product page.
- Not US FTC Green Guides.

Not legal advice. Not a compliance guarantee. Confirm Directive (EU) 2024/825 Annex I points 4a and 4c and the Commission EmpCo FAQ before you publish product copy. The app flags wording and cites rules; it does not run an LCA or approve offsets.
