EU honey origin on the product page

EU honey origin: list countries (and blend %) on the product page before purchase — not only on the jar

EU Food Info Guard (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that reviews allergen, ingredient, nutrition, net quantity, origin, operator, and storage gaps before food product display. It detects all 14 EU Annex II allergens from ingredient text and flags an allergen the ingredients mention but the declared list omits. It does not decide whether a product page is lawful, replace counsel, print official labels, or invent honey blend percentages for the merchant. This page is not legal advice.

The job from 14 June 2026

From 14 June 2026, honey placed on the market or newly labelled under the amended honey rules must show the country or countries of origin. For blends, list those countries in the principal field of vision in descending order of weight, with the percentage each country represents. The live Directive (EU) 2024/1438 (amending honey Directive 2001/110/EC) allows a 5% tolerance for each individual share, calculated on the operator’s traceability documentation — confirm that figure on the Directive or the EUR-Lex honey labelling summary; this page does not invent a tighter band. Generic “blend of EU honeys”, “blend of non-EU honeys”, or “blend of EU and non-EU honeys” wording is the old replacement option; it is no longer enough for newly labelled stock. Products placed on the market or labelled before 14 June 2026 under the previous directive may continue to be marketed until stocks are exhausted (Directive Art. 6). Confirm the live text, not this paraphrase. This page is not legal advice.

Distance selling still needs origin before purchase

If origin is mandatory for that honey SKU, Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 Art. 14 still requires the mandatory particulars — except the date of minimum durability or the use-by date — before the purchase is concluded on the material supporting the distance sale (for example the product page). All mandatory particulars must still appear at delivery. A jar label the shopper only sees after the parcel arrives is too late for that pre-purchase duty. The Commission’s distance-selling page states the same job in plain language. Confirm Art. 14 on the eli URL; this page is a paraphrase.

Native Shopify path

Shopify has no Admin “honey origin” toggle. Put the origin line you already have from the label or traceability file into a product metafield (single-line or multi-line text), then render it with a theme Text, Collapsible, or Custom Liquid block near the buy button — the same pattern as other FIC pre-purchase facts. Do not invent a native honey-origin control that is not in Admin.

Packs and national options

For packages with a net quantity of honey of less than 30 g, the Directive allows ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes instead of full country names. Member States may also provide that, for honey placed on the market in their territory, a blend with more than four origins may show percentages only for the four largest shares when those four together represent more than 50% of the blend, with the remaining countries listed in descending order without a percentage. Confirm your market’s transposition of that option; this page does not publish a Germany/France matrix. Confirm the live Directive and summary, not this paraphrase.

When the app path fits

After the origin text exists in product data, use the app path when you want a gap review across the food-info fields the listing names — allergen, ingredient, nutrition, net quantity, origin, operator, and storage — on the live display path, plus allergen detection and declared-list mismatch flags from ingredient text. EU Food Info Guard does not calculate blend percentages from invoices. It does not decide lawfulness, print official labels, or replace counsel. Not legal advice.

  1. Record the origin country (or blend countries and percentages) from your label / traceability file in product data — a metafield or the app’s origin field.
  2. Open the EU Food Info Guard listing (apps.shopify.com/fic-food-info-guard) and install it on the store that distance-sells honey.
  3. Review origin (and sibling FIC) gaps on the first SKU. Fix any allergen the ingredients mention but the declared list omits.
  4. Confirm the live product page shows the origin countries and blend percentages before purchase. Keep the durability or use-by date apart from that pre-purchase block if it is delivery-only.

Install EU Food Info Guard, review origin gaps, then confirm the live product page before purchase.
