EU FIC nutrition and net quantity
EU distance selling: nutrition declaration and net quantity belong on the product page, not only the parcel
EU Food Info Guard (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that reviews allergen, ingredient, nutrition, net quantity, origin, operator, and storage gaps before food product display. It detects all 14 EU Annex II allergens from ingredient text and flags an allergen the ingredients mention but the declared list omits. It does not decide whether a product page is lawful, and it does not replace counsel. This page is not legal advice.

The job before checkout
For prepacked food offered by distance communication, mandatory food information must be available before the purchase is concluded, and again at delivery. The date of minimum durability or the use-by date is the usual exception that may wait until delivery. A nutrition table or net-quantity line that appears only on the parcel is too late for that pre-purchase duty. This page is not legal advice.
What the live rules say
The Commission’s distance-selling page states the same job in plain language: for prepacked foods sold by distance communication, the responsible food business operator must make all mandatory food information available before the purchase is concluded, except the date of minimum durability or the “use by” date, and must make all mandatory particulars available at delivery (Art. 14(1)). The information must appear on the material supporting the distance selling (for example a webpage) or through other appropriate means the operator clearly identifies, without extra cost to the consumer.
Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 Art. 9(1) lists the mandatory particulars. Those particulars include net quantity of the food and a nutrition declaration, alongside the name of the food, the ingredient list, allergen information, the food business operator’s name and address, and the other Article 9 items that apply to the SKU (including origin or storage conditions when they are required). Art. 14 is the distance-selling rule. Confirm the live articles on that eli URL; this page is a paraphrase, not a substitute for the text.
The Commission’s nutrition-labelling page states that the mandatory nutrition declaration must give the energy value and the amounts of fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein and salt, and that all of that information must be expressed per 100 g or per 100 ml (it may also, in addition, be expressed per portion). Those content and per-100 g / per-100 ml rules sit in Art. 30 and Art. 32 of the same regulation. Confirm the live article numbers on the eli URL, not this paraphrase.
What belongs on the product page
This is an operational checklist for a distance-selling food SKU, not a determination that any page is lawful. Confirm Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 for the SKU in front of you.
- Name of the food
- List of ingredients
- Allergens emphasised in that list (or a “Contains” line where there is no ingredient list)
- Net quantity
- Name and address of the food business operator
- Nutrition declaration — energy plus fat, saturates, carbohydrate, sugars, protein, and salt, per 100 g or 100 ml when that declaration is required
- Other Article 9 particulars that apply to the SKU, including origin or storage conditions when they are required
The durability or use-by date may be delivery-only under Art. 14. Keep that delivery-only note apart from the pre-purchase block.
Native Shopify path
Shopify can show this block without an app: product metafields rendered by a theme metafield block or a custom Liquid block. A custom Product Disclosure can also sit on the product page where a warning or notice is the right shape. Disclosures are a structured warning/notice tool (native types today are chemical-exposure and choking-hazard leaves, plus a custom entry). They are not a full FIC nutrition table. Use metafields or Liquid when you need the per-100 g / per-100 ml declaration and net quantity as food facts, not as a hazard notice.
When the app path fits
Use the app path when you want a gap review across the food-info fields the listing names — allergen, ingredient, nutrition, net quantity, origin, operator, and storage — before the product is displayed, plus allergen detection and declared-list mismatch flags from ingredient text. Theme sync is available if you choose that path. The app organizes merchant data. It does not decide lawfulness, calculate recipes, or replace counsel. Not legal advice.
- Open the EU Food Info Guard listing (
apps.shopify.com/fic-food-info-guard) and install it on the store that distance-sells food. - Review gaps on the first SKU, including nutrition and net quantity, and fix any allergen the ingredients mention but the declared list omits.
- Keep the durability or use-by date apart from the pre-purchase block if it is delivery-only.
- If you choose theme sync, confirm the live product page shows nutrition and net quantity before purchase.
What this page is not
- Not legal advice, a compliance certification, or a substitute for counsel.
- Not a full FIC treatise. Confirm the live regulation for exemptions and SKU-specific particulars.
- Not the allergen-only deep dive. That job is allergen labelling before purchase.
- Not CLP/GHS hazard pictograms. That path is hazard display on the product page.
- Not GPSR manufacturer or responsible-person fields. That path is GPSR manufacturer fields.
