German UWG green claims on Shopify product pages

Vague Umweltaussagen on a DE-facing product page need same-medium clarity — UWG EmpCo rules from 27 September 2026

Green Claims Guard (Shopify App Store) is a Shopify app that, as the live listing states, flags green-claim wording and names the exact provision it cites. The listing names a German pack: inflected wording with UWG paragraph references. It does not decide whether a claim is lawful, replace counsel, or certify a Nachhaltigkeitssiegel. This page is not legal advice. Confirm the live listing; this guide does not add prices or a plan matrix.

Related: CLPLens — Hazard pictograms on the product page, not only the parcel.

Free check first: Green claim wording self-check runs in your browser and sends nothing. Paste product copy and see which environmental wording to review.

Job: if a DE-facing Shopify product page (title, description, badge, or theme snippet) uses short German green wording such as umweltfreundlich, öko, or klimaneutral, treat that as an Umweltaussage under the German UWG EmpCo rules that apply from 27 September 2026 — specify it clearly on the same medium, or drop it. That is not the EU-level EmpCo overview page, and not US Made in USA.

Germany put EmpCo into the UWG from 27 September 2026

Directive (EU) 2024/825 (Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition) is the EU context sibling. Germany transposed those unfair-practices rules through the Drittes Gesetz zur Änderung des Gesetzes gegen den unlauteren Wettbewerb. Confirm the promulgated act on the Federal Law Gazette: BGBl. 2026 I Nr. 43 (HTTP 200 at the time this page was written; PDF at regelungstext.pdf) and the BMJ procedure page Drittes Gesetz zur Änderung des UWG. The BMJ page states the new rules must be applied from 27 September 2026. Directive text: CELEX 32024L0825. This page is not legal advice.

IHK Schwerin’s plain-language note Ab 27.09.2026 neue Regelungen im UWG (HTTP 200 at PR time) likewise treats 27 September 2026 as the date that matters for these greenwashing topics. This page does not invent extra grace for old packaging or existing product copy. Confirm the live BGBl / BMJ / IHK texts, not this paraphrase.

Allgemeine Umweltaussagen need same-medium specification — or recognised performance / a qualifying seal

Cite the live sources; do not treat the next sentences as a statute substitute. IHK Schwerin: an Umweltaussage is “allgemein” when it is not on a Nachhaltigkeitssiegel and the specification is not given clearly and prominently on the same medium (“klar und hervorgehoben auf demselben Medium”). A general claim in that sense is only treated as allowable there if recognised excellent environmental performance can be shown (examples named on that page include the EU Ecolabel / official type-I marks under DIN EN ISO 14024). BMJ’s procedure page paraphrases the same three-way shape: Umweltaussagen must either be explained clearly and prominently on the same medium, rest on recognised excellent environmental performance, or be backed by a Nachhaltigkeitssiegel. Confirm those pages; this is not a checklist that replaces the UWG.

IHK-style examples of short wording in that discussion include “umweltfreundlich”, “grün”, “ökologisch”, “klimafreundlich”, and similar unspecialised lines. “öko”, “CO₂-neutral”, and “klimaneutral” on a product page are the same operational hunt. If the line stays general, specify it on the product page itself — or remove it. Self-made seals without a certification scheme are a different IHK point (Nachhaltigkeitssiegel); this page does not register seals.

“Klimaneutral” is ambiguous until the advertising itself explains it

The BGH press release of 27 June 2024 (I ZR 98/23 — Werbung mit „klimaneutral“, HTTP 200 at PR time) treats “klimaneutral” as a multi-meaning environmental term. The court line, as that release puts it: for such a term, the concrete meaning generally has to be explained in the advertising itself; notes outside that advertising are not treated as enough. Reduction of CO2 and mere offsetting are not equivalent; reduction comes first. That is BGH-style Aufklärung in der Werbung selbst — not a new slogan this page invents.

EmpCo’s separate offset-neutrality job (product “neutral / reduced / positive” GHG lines based on offsetting) is carbon-neutral / offset claims. Use that sibling for the EU Annex I 4c angle. Do not paste this UWG page over that whole how-to.

Shopify ops: edit the product page; a QR-only impact link is often not the same medium

Shopify Admin has no German-UWG toggle. Open the product title, description, metafields, and any theme badge or snippet that carries the Umweltaussage. Put a clear, prominent specification on that same product page, or remove the short adjective. Repeat when you add products or change markets.

At a high level: a QR code or “see our impact page” that sends the shopper to a different URL is often not the same medium as the product page. IHK Schwerin treats missing same-medium specification as what makes the claim “allgemein”. The BGH klimaneutral release treats explaining the term outside the advertising as not enough. Confirm those sources with counsel. This page is not legal advice and does not decide your layout.

App path: scan claims and cited UWG paragraph references — the app does not certify compliance

Re-fetched at PR time (HTTP 200), the Green Claims Guard listing still states: flags green-claim wording and names the exact provision it cites; German pack: inflected wording with UWG paragraph references. Use that path to find DE-facing claim wording and the cited UWG-related flags the listing describes. The app does not decide legality, does not replace counsel, and does not certify seals.

  1. Open the listing (apps.shopify.com/green-claims-guard) and install it on the store that shows DE-facing product copy.
  2. Run a claim scan on your Shopify catalog and content wording. The listing’s job is to flag claim wording and name the provision it cites, including the German pack’s inflected wording with UWG paragraph references.
  3. For each flag: add a clear specification on the same product page, or remove the short Umweltaussage — with counsel, not this page.
  4. Re-open the live product page. Repeat when you add products or change DE-facing copy.
