CLP precautionary statements

Annex IV Part 1 prints the precautionary-statement wording. Article 22 selects it

Direct answer. Precautionary (P) statements under CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 are worded as in Annex IV and selected under Article 22 from the label-element tables in Parts 2 to 5 of Annex I, using the criteria in Annex IV Part 1. In the consolidated text CELEX 02008R1272-20260701 (EN, 01.07.2026; reference line 02008R1272 — EN — 01.07.2026 — 031.001), Article 22(1) says: “The label shall include the relevant precautionary statements.” Article 22(2) says: “The precautionary statements shall be selected from those set out in the tables in Parts 2 to 5 of Annex I indicating the label elements for each hazard class.” Article 22(3) says: “The precautionary statements shall be selected in accordance with the criteria laid down in Part 1 of Annex IV taking into account the hazard statements and the intended or identified use or uses of the substance or the mixture.” Article 22(4) says: “The precautionary statements shall be worded in accordance with Part 2 of Annex IV.” Article 28(3) says: “Not more than six precautionary statements shall appear on the label, unless necessary to reflect the nature and the severity of the hazards.” The tables copy column (2) of Annex IV Part 1. This page is not legal advice.

CLPLens (Shopify App Store · Write a review) records CLP hazard display data, syncs app-owned product metafields, and shows storefront hazard information with audit records. It does not select the statements. Hazard statements are Annex III. EUH statements are Annex II.

How Part 1 introduces the statements

Annex IV is titled “LIST OF PRECAUTIONARY STATEMENTS.” Part 1 says the matrix and the tables in Part 1 include a number of combined precautionary statements, and that these are only examples: suppliers may further combine and consolidate phrases where this contributes to clarity and comprehensibility of label information in accordance with Articles 22 and 28(3). Square brackets, a forward slash, and three full stops in column (2) are explained in the annex by reference to column (5). This page does not copy column (5).

A question about GHS precautionary statements is answered here only with the CLP wording. This page does not restate a UN GHS text, because the UNECE about-GHS page was not available to quote. It also does not describe GB COSHH.

Where Part 2 English does not match column (2)

Article 22(4) requires the wording in Part 2 of Annex IV. Part 2 prints each statement in the official languages, including EN. For most codes, the EN line matches column (2) of Part 1. The rows below are the word-level differences found in the same consolidation. Spacing before an ellipsis, a final full stop, and a superscript “o” where Part 1 prints “°” also differ on some codes (P230, P231 + P232, P250, P378, P370 + P378, P381, P401, P411, P412, P413, P370 + P372 + P380 + P373, and P502). Read both parts before you print a sentence.
