Green claims catalog scan

Scan a Shopify catalog for risky green-claim wording, with the provision each flag cites

Direct answer. To find greenwashing risks before EU EmpCo rules (Directive (EU) 2024/825) apply to your product copy, scan the whole catalog and content for green-claim wording and review each flag against the rule it cites. Green Claims Guard flags green-claim wording and names the exact provision it cites. Its listing also describes a German pack with inflected wording and UWG paragraph references, and a US pack for Made in USA origin claims under 16 CFR Part 323. It does not decide whether a claim is lawful.

See the EU generic green-claims ban, the EmpCo directive summary, official greenwashing examples, and the green claim wording check.

Green Claims Guard (Shopify App Store) scans green marketing wording in catalog and content, flags green-claim wording and names the exact provision it cites, and exports dated evidence records for review. It does not decide whether a claim is lawful. This page is the catalog-and-content scan that cites the provision on each flag — not the evidence vault, recycled %, compostable wording, UWG DE, or the generic ban. This page is not legal advice.

The 10-minute check: five questions from Directive (EU) 2024/825

A merchant in the Shopify Community (thread 686293) asked how to find risky, unsupported product descriptions. Since 27 September 2026, Directive (EU) 2024/825 (EmpCo) adds these environmental practices to the Annex I list of the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive. Search your product titles, descriptions, collection pages and images’ alt text for each one.

  1. Generic claims (Annex I, point 4a). Search for “eco-friendly”, “green”, “climate friendly”, “biodegradable” and similar adjectives. Unless recognised excellent environmental performance applies, replace each with a specific, supportable statement or remove it. See the generic ban.
  2. Offset-based neutrality (point 4c). Search for “carbon neutral”, “climate neutral” and “CO2 compensated”. Claiming, based on offsetting, that a product has a neutral, reduced or positive impact is banned. See offset claims.
  3. Whole product vs one part (point 4b). Search for “made with recycled” and “sustainable”. If only the packaging or one component qualifies, say which part in the same line. See whole product vs one part.
  4. Own badges (point 2a). List every eco badge or seal in your theme and images. A sustainability label not based on a certification scheme or not established by public authorities is banned. See EU Ecolabel and label rules.
  5. Future promises. Search for “net zero by” and “by 2030”. A future environmental performance claim needs a detailed, realistic implementation plan verified by an independent third-party expert. See future performance claims.

Copy each hit into a sheet with its URL, the point it matches and your decision: rewrite, substantiate or remove. Green Claims Guard runs the same kind of search across the catalog and content and names the provision each flag cites; it does not decide whether a claim is lawful. This page is not legal advice.

Why scan catalog and content first

Hand edits miss repeated eco adjectives across collections. A catalog-and-content scan surfaces wording to review before you argue provisions or file evidence.

How to scan catalog and content for green claims

  1. Run a scan across product catalog copy and related content fields you use for marketing claims.
  2. Review each flag and clean or substantiate the wording.
  3. When you need the rule name on a flag, use the cited-provision view.
  4. Keep dated evidence when a claim must be substantiated later.

Not the same as cited provision, evidence vault, EmpCo recyclable, UWG DE, or the generic ban
